Colombia’s Earthquake: Search Continues for Missing

A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 hit western Colombia, affecting numerous cities including Cali, Quibdo, and Pereira. The disaster claimed at least 111 lives and caused extensive destruction. Approximately 1,600 buildings were damaged or destroyed, leaving many people trapped in the rubble. Search and rescue efforts commenced immediately.

President’s Response

Newly sworn-in President Abelardo de la Espriella, leading the nation through this crisis, visited Quibdo to evaluate the damage. De la Espriella’s administration rapidly mobilized military and police resources, deploying engineers, rescue teams, and search dogs to assist in the rescue operations. He also promised rental support for displaced residents.

“The entire military and police apparatus has been activated,” President de la Espriella emphasized during his visit to one of the hardest-hit areas.

Challenges in Choco

Choco, a region significantly affected by the quake, faces additional challenges due to its remote location. Accessible mainly by boat or airplane, this region demands extra effort from relief teams working to reach isolated communities. The President assured that Choco will no longer be neglected and vowed continuous support for its recovery.
