Shawn Fain, the president of the United Automobile Workers (UAW), is navigating significant challenges as he seeks re-election in a bid complicated by a federal investigation and internal union conflicts. The election is set for two months from now and Fain’s leadership style has become a focal point.
Fain’s leadership has brought progress, with successful negotiations for major contracts with prominent automotive manufacturers. He has also taken steps to expand union influence by organizing workers at Volkswagen in Tennessee and bolstering the UAW’s political strength. This trajectory seemed to signal a revival for the UAW after a period of diminishing power.
Despite these achievements, Fain faces opposition from former allies and scrutiny under a federal monitor. This monitor, appointed following a 2021 court settlement addressing a corruption scandal within the union, has raised accusations against Fain. The allegations include misuse of his authority and retaliation against board members who resisted his directives. These reports have initiated a criminal investigation by the U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit.
Fain has refuted any allegations of misconduct, asserting that his opponents are manipulating the election against him. He believes the federal monitor, Neil Barofsky, is targeting him due to his political positions, notably the union’s support for a Gaza cease-fire.
These controversies became public over the summer when, in July, Fain defended his conduct and disclosed that he had recorded a December 2023 phone call with Barofsky. In this call, Barofsky reportedly expressed concern that Fain’s comments on the UAW’s support for a cease-fire appeared to liken Israel to Nazi Germany.
The unfolding events add complexity to Fain’s bid for a second term as UAW president, bringing attention to the internal tensions within the union.
