The New York Mets secured their first Subway Series win of the season against the New York Yankees in an intense showdown on Sunday afternoon.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, with runners on first and third and one out, rookie Carson Benge was at bat. Benge managed a chopper that soared over the head of Yankees reliever Tim Hill. As the ball cleared, Benge felt confident about the outcome.
“Once it went over the pitcher’s head I kind of knew,” Benge said following the game.
A collision between Yankees infielders Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann occurred as they attempted to field the ball, but neither succeeded. Marcus Semien seized the moment to dash home, scoring the decisive run, and clinching the game for the Mets with a final score of 7-6.
The Yankees previously held a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Tyrone Taylor was instrumental in changing the game’s trajectory, batting with Benge and Juan Soto on base. With two outs, Taylor launched a pivotal left-field pitch off David Bednar, equalizing the score in dramatic fashion. This marked Taylor’s third home run for the season.
“I didn’t know it was going to stay fair,” Taylor admitted. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
The Yankees faced a difficult road stretch, going 2-7 on their trip and now preparing for a critical seven-game homestand against American League East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Yankees slugger Aaron Judge reflected on the team’s struggles.
“Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short,” Judge noted. “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar, who experienced his second blown save in 12 attempts, saw his ERA increase to 4.95.
“Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” Bednar remarked. “It’s just very frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commended the team’s resilience under pressure.
“We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” Mendoza stated. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
