Unauthorized fireworks in Rome led to a stampede, injuring several horses and riders. The event occurred during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade.
Incident Overview
The stampede took place near the ancient Baths of Caracalla as mounted units from Italy’s armed forces and law enforcement rehearsed. According to Reuters, the fireworks startled 35 horses, causing them to run through city streets.
Video footage showed the horses galloping along Via Cristoforo Colombo, recorded by drivers nearby. The search for the horses extended into the next morning, with the last horse found approximately nine miles away.
Details of the Stampede
The fireworks ignited unexpectedly just before 11:30 p.m., causing panic among horses. Many were accompanied by handlers from the Army, Carabinieri, and state police. While some riders were mounted, others led horses by hand as they broke free.
During the chaos, a 22-year-old soldier reportedly suffered injuries including broken ribs and a punctured lung. Though serious, the injuries are not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were injured, but they avoided euthanasia.
The Italian news outlet ANSA reported that the incident also injured three young soldiers and a 29-year-old policewoman.
Investigation of the Fireworks
Officials are investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were set off. The Rome Local Police Command reported involvement of four traffic police officers, with one officer allegedly lighting fireworks 200 yards from the horses.
The officer involved, identified as a 50-year-old, joined the force after the most recent exam. Video and witness reports suggest the explosions and horse escape happened together.
Response from Authorities
Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis expressed disappointment, suggesting the incident damaged the Corps’ reputation. He assured that actions would be taken against those responsible.
In response to the event, Sclavis remarked, “Last night’s events hit us like a tsunami.”
