Comedian Bill Maher will be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday. This award has recognized those contributing significantly to U.S. humor since 1998. The Kennedy Center highlighted Maher’s impact on American comedy as it announced the honor in March. His show, ‘Politically Incorrect,’ was a notable part of the 1990s comedy landscape.
Past recipients of the award include Conan O’Brien, Dave Chappelle, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Letterman, Carol Burnett, and Tina Fey. Celebrities like Woody Harrelson, Arianna Huffington, and Jay Leno are set to attend the event. President Donald Trump, who has influenced the Kennedy Center’s direction in his second term, is not expected to appear.
Political Changes at the Kennedy Center
The award comes as the Kennedy Center experiences significant political shifts. After Trump’s return to office in January 2025, he replaced much of the center’s leadership and appointed allies to the board, naming himself as chairman. This led to his name being added to the building’s facade, sparking a legal battle over presidential authority.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled the addition of Trump’s name illegal, ordering its removal. This decision halted plans to close the center for renovations. The area where Trump’s name was displayed is now covered with a tarp. The Kennedy Center’s programming remains uncertain, as the court has not required rescheduling or new events.
Judge Cooper has asked for updates on the tarp’s duration. The Kennedy Center’s final planned event before the halted closure is ‘The Freedom Gathering: A Musical Celebration’ on July 3.
Maher and Trump’s Complicated History
Maher’s selection for the award is noteworthy due to his strained relationship with Trump. In a 2013 incident, Trump sued Maher for $5 million over a joke made on ‘The Tonight Show.’ Although Trump provided his birth certificate, Maher did not fulfill the comedic bet, and the lawsuit was ultimately dropped.
Tensions resurfaced this year when Trump criticized a meal shared with Maher. Trump claimed Maher was nervous and lacked confidence. Maher countered on ‘Real Time,’ describing the dinner as cordial and Trump as different from his TV persona. Maher acknowledged some of Trump’s policies he found agreeable, asserting his status as an honest broker despite political leanings.
Maher interviewed Vice President JD Vance on his recent show, discussing topics like the Iran conflict and immigration. The conversation highlighted election outcomes narratives, which Maher critiqued.
The announcement of Maher’s award generated drama. After The Atlantic reported his win, the White House reacted, denying the claims on social media. Further discussions led to the confirmation of Maher receiving the award.
Celebrity Appearances and Historical Feuds
Other notable figures appearing at the event have varied histories with Trump. Arianna Huffington and Trump have had longstanding disagreements. Stephen A. Smith, attending the ceremony, criticized Trump’s recent NBA Finals attendance, describing it as self-serving and egotistic.
