Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play in the preseason opener against the Rams next week. It is also possible that Mahomes might miss the entire preseason.
This decision follows Mahomes’ knee surgery in December, when he had torn ligaments repaired. His rehabilitation has been ahead of schedule, allowing him to participate fully in offseason activities and report to training camp promptly. Dr. Dan Cooper, who conducted the surgery, cleared Mahomes without restrictions to practice last month.
Reid stated, “There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him. Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I will play him the second or third game, but percentages probably lean against doing that.” Mahomes’ experience may exempt him from needing preseason play. Yet, his competitive spirit might encourage some field time, possibly in the game against Tampa Bay. Mahomes has expressed eagerness to feel contact again to regain his football rhythm.
The Chiefs have several quarterbacks needing preseason experience. They acquired veteran Justin Fields from the Jets as their backup, who requires game time to adjust to the new offense. Garrett Nussmeier, a rookie from LSU, also needs playing time to develop.
Reid mentioned, “We’ve got new people behind (Mahomes) that need some work. The more reps they get, the better.”
Currently, several Chiefs players are sidelined due to injuries. Offensive guard Trey Smith, a two-time Pro Bowl player, was examined by a hip specialist as a precaution for hip discomfort. Reid assured that “he’s going to be OK.” Other injuries include defensive end Ashton Gillotte’s hamstring strain, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa’s groin issue, linebacker Drue Tranquill’s back pain, wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s shoulder concern, defensive back L’Jarius Sneed’s knee trouble, and cornerback Mansoor Delane’s shoulder injury.
Wide receiver Cyrus Allen, a fifth-round pick, returned to practice after a shin bruise from Monday’s session. Although he was present, he avoided contact drills. “He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive,” Reid commented. “He’s at all the meetings. He’s focused in. He wants to get out there. He doesn’t want to miss. He’s been working hard. We’ll just ease him back in, like I said.”
