Congressman Tom Kean Jr.’s Absence Raises Political Questions

1 month ago 0

In Westfield, New Jersey, residents gathered recently to discuss affordable housing and new data centers. However, another pressing issue dominated the conversation. They wanted to know the whereabouts of their congressman, Republican Tom Kean Jr.

Steve McCabe, an 80-year-old retired lawyer, questioned State Senator Jon Bramnick about Kean’s extended medical absence, lasting nearly three months. Bramnick was unable to provide any information about Kean’s health status but mentioned Kean’s commitment to his duties in the past. He recalled instances when Kean would brave snowstorms to attend legislative votes.

Kean has missed more than 100 votes in Congress and has not been seen either in Washington or his district. This mysterious absence holds potential national political implications, as Kean’s district is a critical target for Democrats aiming to regain congressional control. Despite the situation, Kean is running for reelection without any challengers in the upcoming primary. Meanwhile, several Democrats are vying for their party’s nomination.

Harrison Neely, Kean’s campaign consultant, described the situation as a medical emergency and assured that Kean would provide transparency soon and return to his duties shortly. Neely emphasized that emergencies like these are unplanned and happen at inconvenient times.

Bramnick speculated that the situation must be serious. He stated, “For him not to be there, that’s a big deal.” House Speaker Mike Johnson has echoed the expectation of Kean’s return and transparency about his health.

Kean represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. It’s a district of suburbs and small towns, including President Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course.

After the 2021 redistricting, it became more favorable to Republicans but remains competitive. The district shifted between parties in the last two midterm elections. Republican Leonard Lance lost to Democrat Tom Malinowski in 2018, and Malinowski was then defeated by Kean in 2022.

The New Jersey Globe reported a call from Kean claiming a positive outlook for his recovery but offered no specifics about his condition.

Bruce Paterson, a retired engineer from Garwood, expressed his concerns about Kean’s absence. He identifies as a moderate Democrat and plans to support Kean in the general election for political balance in a predominantly Democratic state. During a town hall event, he wondered what would happen if Kean stepped down after the primary. Bramnick explained that a convention of district county leaders would select a replacement. However, he questioned his own compatibility with today’s Republican Party, citing past criticism of Trump, while Kean had embraced the former president.

On the Democratic side, candidates like Michael Roth and Rebecca Bennett have criticized Kean’s lack of communication. Roth, a former Small Business Administration official, accused Kean of abandoning his responsibilities. Bennett, a Navy veteran, criticized Kean’s involvement in securing funds for the Gateway Tunnel project.

Additional Democratic candidates, Tina Shah, an intensive care doctor, and Brian Varela, a marketing agency founder, have been critical of Kean’s record in debates.

Benjamin Dworkin, director of the Rowan Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship, noted that despite Kean’s current absence, he holds a financial advantage over Democratic opponents. He suggested the decisive factor would be Kean’s effectiveness upon his return, not his missed votes in spring.
