The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has long been a site of American history, hosting protests, celebrations, and monumental speeches. Recently, it became embroiled in controversy over its maintenance.
In April, President Trump expressed disgust over the condition of the water, describing it as ‘filthy’ and ‘disgusting.’ He subsequently awarded a no-bid contract to resurface the pool’s basin and paint it ‘American flag blue’ ahead of the July 4th festivities.
The renovation project, according to reports, exceeded $14 million. Despite the costly overhaul, the pool’s condition drew attention due to its pronounced green tint, reminiscent of the Chicago River on St. Patrick’s Day.
This green hue is owing to algae, a common issue since the pool’s initial fill in 1923. Algae thrives in warm, stagnant water, typical of the shallow reflecting pool during Washington, D.C.’s summer heat.
A recent University of Virginia satellite analysis, commissioned by the Washington Post, revealed an increased algae presence in the pool this month compared to the past five years.
The Interior Department responded by deploying a ‘state-of-the-art ozone nanobubbler filtration system’ to tackle the algae issue.
Kate Martin, a spokesperson, remarked that President Trump, ‘an expert builder,’ has rectified the pool’s issues, contrasting with previous efforts by the Obama-Biden administration. During Obama’s first term, extensive work aimed at preventing the pool from sinking and improving filtration was undertaken.
In today’s politically charged climate, the algae issue underscores how certain matters transcend party affiliations. The Reflecting Pool remains green regardless of political views.
