Climbers Caught in Avalanche
Nirmal Purja, a celebrated climber, and nine others from a mountaineering expedition have died in an avalanche on Broad Peak. Elite Expeditions, Purja’s company, confirmed his death and the loss of other team members.
“It is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Mirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja tragically lost his life,” said Elite Expeditions.
Broad Peak stands at 26,414 feet in Northern Pakistan.
Nirmal Purja’s Achievements
Purja, a 43-year-old British-Nepali climber, gained fame by breaking several climbing records. In 2019, he climbed 14 mountains worldwide over 8,000 meters high in 6 months and 6 days, featured in a Netflix documentary. He served for a decade in the UK’s Special Boat Service.
International Team Involved
The expedition included climbers from Oman, Nepal, Pakistan, China, and the U.S., as reported by the Alpine Club of Pakistan. American climber Mallory Geis, aged 39, was part of the group. She had closed her Pilates studio in San Antonio to pursue high-altitude climbing.
“Taking a giant leap into the unknown to see where life goes,” Geis once posted, showing enthusiasm for her climbing ventures.
George Geis described his daughter as a positive person capable of achieving anything she desired.
Rescue Efforts
Military helicopters along with high-altitude rescue teams faced challenging conditions while searching the avalanche area. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah confirmed the demise of Nepalese climbers. Remains of some climbers were taken to hospitals in Pakistan.
“Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy,” Elite Expeditions expressed.
Their condolences go out to families and friends affected by the tragedy.
