Construction is underway for BJ’s Wholesale Club in Portage. Despite this, a ceremonial groundbreaking event was held on Wednesday. The store will span 100,000 square feet and is expected to employ between 100 to 150 people. Ryan Carney, a spokesperson for BJ’s, shared this information.
BJ’s has Massachusetts roots, with a history going back over 40 years. The company’s name honors Beverly Jean, daughter of a founder. Portage’s status as the third-largest city in Northwest Indiana, along with its proximity to Chicago, attracted BJ’s attention. Carney mentioned that the area appears to be experiencing growth.
Nearby, a new Target store is also under construction. Dan Botich, Portage Redevelopment Director, noted that an increase in residential developments is fueling commercial interest. He mentioned approved subdivisions adding 1,200 housing units in three to five years and additional projects undergoing planning. This aligns with Mayor Austin Bonta’s vision for strategic growth towards the city’s south and southeast. There is consideration for a new fire station to enhance emergency response capabilities.
“The presence of residential areas encourages development,” Botich noted.
Work on a parking lot at the new BJ’s location continues. According to Botich, Portage is a hub for expanding industry, manufacturing, and residential demand. Businesses from Illinois show keen interest. He jokingly said his economic development budget requires only $2 to send Christmas cards to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, humorously thanking their policies for boosting local growth.
Portage continues to grow, as affirmed by Andy Maletta, Portage Economic Development Corp.’s Executive Director. He credits new subdivisions and a strong performance track record with chains like Applebee’s and Texas Roadhouse. High median income, driven by affordable homes and union jobs, makes Portage attractive to commercial businesses, who show interest in the U.S. 6 corridor.
Maletta mentioned the excitement about BJ’s, noting the absence of wholesale warehouses like Costco or Sam’s Club in Porter County. BJ’s presence marks an expansion west from Massachusetts, having grown with four new stores opening last month and 267 locations total. The Portage club is expected to welcome shoppers this winter, alongside other new locations in Kentucky and Florida. BJ’s already operates in Carmel and Noblesville in Indiana.
Carney highlighted BJ’s distinct grocery section. Members often complete their weekly shopping there, benefiting from discounts up to 20% on groceries. Memberships begin at $40 annually. BJ’s also commits to community engagement by supporting the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
“We’re very active in our communities,” Carney emphasized.
