Recent protests outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, evolved into a political confrontation. Far-left communist-socialist activists and a far-right group clashed during a demonstration over facility conditions.
The unrest began when detainees alleged mistreatment and inadequate care. The Department of Homeland Security denied these claims, citing daily meal options like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak.
Earlier, violent skirmishes led to assaults on federal agents, prompting New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill to involve the state police for security.
The detention center was heavily fortified with barriers and fencing. State officials noted most arrested individuals were not locals. Far-left activists chanted anti-ICE slogans, while distributing communist literature. Meanwhile, far-right activists, including the Proud Boys, showed support for ICE.
Governor Sherrill criticized ICE’s involvement, warning that extremist groups were endangering public safety. She urged protesters to cooperate with law enforcement, allowing community leaders to continue advocating for detainees.
The governor also reported limited access for state health inspectors and called on DHS to stop pressuring detainees into deportation actions.
