A man, aged 38, lost his life following a shark attack in Australia on Saturday. The incident occurred at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, off the country’s western coast, just before 10 a.m. local time, according to police reports. Rottnest Island is situated approximately 19 miles west of Perth.
Despite efforts to bring him to shore and resuscitate him, the man did not regain consciousness. A spokesperson from St. John WA Ambulance noted, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.”
The attack took place in an area popular with tourists. Authorities identified the responsible shark as a great white. Although he was quickly transported by boat to shore and paramedics from St. John WA were waiting, they were unfortunately unable to revive him.
This incident marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged people to take extra precautions in the vicinity. Footage by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation depicted police and rescue teams at the scene with a vessel for assistance.
Earlier in January, a 12-year-old boy died a week after a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. Additionally, within a span of two days, three separate non-fatal shark attacks occurred along the New South Wales coast.
