A person was stabbed Tuesday morning in the heart of downtown Nantucket, steps away from the ferry docks. These docks draw thousands of visitors to the affluent Massachusetts island each summer, according to authorities.
Police reported that officers responded at 10:23 a.m. to a call about a stabbing on South Beach Street, located between Broad Street and Oak Street. This area is known for its busy commercial activity near the Steamship Authority ferry terminal.
The victim was treated at the scene and taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital by the fire department.
The incident occurred in an area heavily frequented by tourists. Witness accounts shared with the Nantucket Current indicated that a verbal and physical dispute led to the stabbing. This altercation involved drivers from a Myles Reis garbage truck and a Sayles Seafood delivery truck.
After being stabbed, the victim ran towards ‘The Strip.’ Employees from Stubby’s and nearby businesses attempted to stop the bleeding with napkins before emergency personnel arrived.
Authorities detained another person involved in the incident. By Tuesday evening, officials had not disclosed the suspect’s identity. An arraignment was set for Wednesday morning in Nantucket District Court.
The investigation is ongoing, with no further details provided by police. As Nantucket welcomes waves of tourists, the usually quiet island transforms with vacationers and seasonal workers.
Massachusetts State Police offered no additional information and directed inquiries to the Nantucket Police Department.
