The brutal murder of four immigrant workers in Italy has brought attention to the widespread exploitation of labor by criminal gangs in the country’s agricultural sector.
On June 3, 2026, surveillance footage revealed a disturbing incident in Calabria, southern Italy. Two individuals were seen pouring fuel over a van and blocking the doors, setting it and the passengers inside ablaze. This horrific act has shocked the nation and drawn the notice of top officials, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Mohammad Taj Alamyar, a 35-year-old from Afghanistan, survived the incident. He has been sharing his harrowing experience with the media. Alamyar and the victims, originally from Afghanistan and Pakistan, had been employed as fruit pickers in the region. According to Alamyar, the violent attack occurred after they questioned their employers about withheld wages. The perpetrators, identified as Pakistani drug traffickers linked to Italian organized crime, reacted with brutality.
Alamyar, with both hands bandaged and one arm in a sling, recounted to La Repubblica, an Italian newspaper, that he managed to survive by escaping through the rear of the burning vehicle.
Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the need for justice in a social media post on Wednesday. She stated, “Italy does not retreat in the face of violence and barbarity. It is essential to shed full light on this terrible crime and bring all those responsible to justice.”
