Darializa Avila Chevalier, known for her socialist views and controversial comments, has emerged victorious in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, she defeated the long-serving Democratic incumbent, Rep. Adriano Espaillat.
Avila Chevalier, a community organizer and Columbia University graduate, garnered attention for her leftist advocacy during her academic years. She was affiliated with Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a group known for provocative statements such as “Death to America.” Following her win, Avila Chevalier is aiming to position herself further left than prominent progressives like Kamala Harris.
Her past views on private property, law enforcement, and borders have sparked controversy. From 2018 to 2022, deleted social media posts revealed her support for nationalizing significant parts of the private sector and abolishing borders, prisons, and police. In a 2021 repost, she emphasized that such measures are “possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” Additionally, reports noted her stance against all deportations and her comments encouraging the abolition of borders.
Avila Chevalier also attracted attention for her harsh criticism of U.S. policies and political figures. She called the United States “a disgrace” and expressed disdain towards the American flag in several online posts. Furthermore, she labeled former President Joe Biden a “rapist” and “war criminal” and criticized Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris.
Despite these controversies, Avila Chevalier secured the Democratic nomination with Mamdani’s endorsement and the support of an increasingly left-leaning voter base in New York. During a debate with Espaillat, who has a history of overcoming immigration challenges to run for office, Avila Chevalier reiterated her belief that illegal aliens should not face deportation, even if they commit violent crimes.
Mamdani, who first endorsed Avila Chevalier in May, remained steadfast in his support. He acknowledged not seeing her contentious posts but noted her evolving views. “When I see a candidate like her standing up for those unjustly detained by ICE and for the working person often sidelined in our politics, I believe she would be a champion for the district and beyond,” Mamdani stated.
The 13th Congressional District, encompassing Upper Manhattan and parts of the West Bronx, has consistently been a Democratic stronghold. With her recent primary win, Avila Chevalier is poised to secure victory in the general election.
