European Parliament Approves Tougher Migrant Return System

1 week ago 0

The European Parliament recently witnessed a heated exchange following the approval of major changes to the European Union’s migrant return policy. This development reflects a shift towards stricter immigration enforcement driven by discontent among voters.

On Wednesday, members of the European Parliament voted 418 to 218, with 30 abstentions, to support the Return Regulation. This measure aims to expedite the deportation process for third-country nationals residing illegally within the EU. The vote sparked an immediate reaction; right-wing lawmakers celebrated and chanted, “send them back,” a moment captured in video footage. In contrast, lawmakers on the left countered their chants with “shame on you.”

The approved legislation is yet to receive formal approval from the Council of the European Union and must be published in the Official Journal before implementation. The contentious atmosphere highlights existing divisions within Europe regarding migration issues, even as EU institutions advance policies once considered untouchable.

The legislation would enable member states to detain certain migrants for up to 24 months with a potential six-month extension. It also introduces the concept of “return hubs” outside the EU in third countries willing to accommodate migrants deemed for return.

Supporters argue the new rules are vital as EU countries struggle to execute deportation orders effectively. According to the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, only about 20% of migrants receiving return decisions are deported as per the European Commission’s data.

Recent reports by Fox News Digital indicate the EU is gravitating towards tougher border and asylum measures amidst growing concerns over the continent’s illegal immigration issues. These measures involve enhanced screening, identity checks, security measures, and the employment of biometric data such as fingerprints and facial recognition.

Conservative leaders viewed the vote as a triumph. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni celebrated the outcome, labeling the legislation a “historic measure,” as mentioned in her social media post. Other right-wing leaders from France and Austria echoed similar sentiments, viewing the decision as evidence that right-wing pressure is influencing changes in EU policy.

Opponents, however, criticize lawmakers for dehumanizing migrants and undermining essential protections. Reports from The Guardian quoted socialist vice president of the European Parliament, Javi López, describing the session as “disgraceful,” while Ilaria Salis of the Italian Green and Left Alliance termed the celebrations “horrifying.”

Human rights organizations have also voiced concerns. Volker Türk, the United Nations human rights chief, warned that the new rules might increase detention rates, establish offshore return hubs, and diminish safeguards against forced returns, as reported by Reuters.
