Mamdani’s Influence Tested in New York Congressional Primaries

1 week ago 0

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces a significant test of his political influence as he supports candidates in the city’s congressional primaries. His endorsements challenge established Democrats, seeking to bolster progressives and socialists in Congress.

Key Endorsements

Mamdani endorsed candidates in several New York City congressional districts. In New York’s 10th District, he supports Brad Lander against incumbent Dan Goldman. In the 13th District, he backs Darializa Avila Chevalier to challenge Representative Adriano Espaillat. He also endorsed Claire Valdez in the 7th District’s open race, pitting her against Antonio Reynoso. Avila Chevalier and Valdez are DSA members, aligning with Mamdani’s political direction. Lander lacks affiliation with the DSA but shares a progressive stance.

Valdez vs. Reynoso: New York’s 7th District

With Nydia Velázquez not running for reelection, the race in New York’s 7th District opens in a strongly left-leaning area. Valdez, relatively new to city politics, faces Reynoso, an established figure. Political heavyweights like Bernie Sanders back Valdez, while Velázquez and the Working Families Party support Reynoso.

Polling insights: Emerson College showed Valdez at 23% and Reynoso at 21%. Undecided voters constituted 43%. Prediction markets favored Valdez, giving her an 83% chance of winning the primary.

Lander vs. Goldman: New York’s 10th District

Brad Lander, endorsed early by Mamdani, appears strong against Dan Goldman, who some view as insufficiently progressive for the district. Emerson College poll results indicated Lander leading significantly with 57%, compared to Goldman’s 23%. Prediction markets heavily favor Lander, showing high chances of his victory.

Avila Chevalier vs. Espaillat: New York’s 13th District

Espaillat’s incumbent status is challenged by Avila Chevalier, who pushes for more progressive policies. The situation is tense due to controversial past social media posts from Avila Chevalier, addressed through her distancing from those comments.

Polls indicate a close race. Data for Progress showed Avila Chevalier leading with 39% over Espaillat’s 35%. Prediction markets slightly favor Espaillat, with over 60% chances of winning.

Mamdani’s Position Against Establishment

Mamdani’s endorsements mark a reshaping of New York City politics, challenging figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Moderate Democrats favor establishment members, highlighting tensions within the party.

A Democratic strategist, Basil Smikle, emphasized the “outsider-insider tension” within the party, where Mamdani’s supporters strive for change against long-standing party figures.

Future of DSA in Politics

With growing frustration against the conservative administration, DSA seeks to expand its influence in the midterm elections. Successful endorsements in key races add momentum to their political agenda.

In Washington, D.C., DSA member Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic primary and is favored in the general election. In Los Angeles, Nithya Raman aims to challenge incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. Federally, Chris Rabb shows strong prospects in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, with endorsements in other districts across the country aligning with the DSA’s mission.
