Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s office announced Monday that he will not participate in voting on the Senate floor this week due to ongoing recovery from a recent hospitalization.

McConnell, a 84-year-old Republican, was admitted to a hospital on June 14, 2026, for undisclosed reasons. His staff confirmed that he is receiving excellent care, yet they did not reveal specifics about his medical condition.

Despite his absence, the Senate proceeds with critical budget discussions. McConnell’s team assured that his office is working diligently on federal and Kentucky state-related issues under his guidance, despite his physical absence from voting activities.

A statement from McConnell’s office mentioned, “Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week.” His absence continues even though senior Republican leadership initially hoped for a quick return. Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed optimism last week, saying McConnell “sounded good” and was actively engaged in legislative developments. Similarly, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul noted that McConnell was “doing better,” despite not having spoken with him directly.

McConnell has faced several health challenges recently, having survived childhood polio. Earlier this year, he was hospitalized for “flu-like symptoms.” Public appearances showed physical strain, including a bandaged hand visible during a May committee hearing. This follows major health issues in 2023, when he was hospitalized for a concussion and fractured rib after a fall, leading to freezing episodes during press conferences.

His recovery comes amid a significant legislative period for McConnell. After serving as the Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2025, he announced he will not seek reelection when his seventh term concludes in January 2027.
