Rick Adelman, a Basketball Hall of Fame inductee known for his impactful coaching career, has passed away at age 79. His death was announced by the National Basketball Coaches Association, with the cause yet to be disclosed.
Adelman played for seven NBA seasons before becoming one of the winningest coaches in league history, securing 1,042 victories. This achievement ranks him tenth in all-time coaching wins. His coaching tenure included stints with teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and others.
The Denver Nuggets expressed their condolences, stating, “The Denver Nuggets were extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Hall of Fame Head Coach Rick Adelman.”
Only a few coaches, including Pat Riley and Gregg Popovich, have both coached more games and achieved a better winning percentage than Adelman. During his career, he took the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice.
The coaches’ association honored Adelman with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Indiana coach Rick Carlisle highlighted Adelman’s innovation, integrity, and excellence, noting, “His teams always played to their strengths.”
His NBA coaching career began in an unexpected way. Adelman initially aimed to be a high school coach, but his journey led him to Chemeketa Community College in Oregon. His success there caught the attention of Jack Ramsey of the Portland Trail Blazers, who invited Adelman to join his staff.
With Ramsey’s and Mike Schuler’s mentorship, Adelman eventually became the interim head coach for the Trail Blazers during the 1988-89 season. By the 1989-90 season, he was leading the team to an impressive 59-win season and another finals appearance just two years later.
Adelman’s stint in Sacramento included an eight-year run with consecutive winning seasons. His innovative offensive strategies during this time were key to the team’s success.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked, “He was a brilliant strategist and teacher of the game.”
Throughout his career, Rick Adelman coached 210 players in NBA games. Notable among them is guard Kyle Lowry, who reflected on how Adelman trusted and developed him as a player.
In 2008, Adelman led the Houston Rockets to a 22-game winning streak, marking one of the longest in NBA history. The Rockets celebrated his professionalism and commitment, acknowledging his contributions to the team’s legacy.
Adelman’s influence extended beyond his coaching victories. He was part of the inaugural Portland team in 1970, leaving a lasting impression on the franchise.
The Portland Trail Blazers stated, “Rick was one of the most influential figures in franchise history.”
Rick Adelman’s legacy as a coach, mentor, and strategist will endure in the history of basketball.
