President Donald Trump criticized Texas Senator John Cornyn for being “VERY disloyal” on social media, encouraging voters to support Cornyn’s opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, in the Texas Senate primary runoff. Trump highlighted Cornyn’s lack of support for key legislation involving voter ID and mail-in ballots, further advocating for Paxton as a loyal ally.
Trump praised Paxton as a “GREAT Attorney General” and emphasized the need to vote for him, asserting that he would not let supporters down. Trump’s endorsement, made earlier in the week, has strengthened Paxton’s position in the nomination race.
This incident marks another instance where Trump aims to replace a disagreeing politician with one aligned with his perspective. Such endorsements have been fruitful for Trump recently, as seen in Kentucky where Representative Thomas Massie lost to Trump’s choice, Ed Gallrein, and in Louisiana where Senator Bill Cassidy was defeated by Trump-backed candidates Julia Letlow and John Fleming.
While discussing his stance on NewsNation’s The Hill, Cornyn differentiated himself from cases like Cassidy’s and Massie’s, stating that he has been a Trump ally. He indicated that Trump’s backing of Paxton stems from Senate frustrations, explaining his selective disagreements with Trump on a case-by-case basis.
Significance of the Election
The victor of the primary runoff will face Democratic state Representative James Talarico in November. Talarico blends faith-based discourse with progressive politics and is considered a formidable opponent, despite Texas’s previous strong support for Trump in the 2024 election.
With an eye on general election competitiveness, many Republican leaders have rallied behind Cornyn, viewing Paxton’s history as problematic due to his legal and ethical controversies. These controversies include a 2015 securities fraud case, which concluded without a conviction, corruption allegations leading to a $6.6 million state settlement, and a 2023 impeachment by the Republican-led Texas House, from which he was acquitted later.
Support for Cornyn
Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed his support for Cornyn, despite Trump’s endorsement of Paxton. Thune stated that Trump’s actions didn’t alter his support for Cornyn, emphasizing Cornyn’s effectiveness as a senator.
Thune acknowledged the challenges Republicans face in maintaining Senate control, defending 24 seats compared to the Democrats’ nine. He noted that while each state is important, success largely depends on the quality of the candidates.
