Fatal Houthi Attack in Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Yemeni authorities announced that six individuals perished when Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked a ship in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. The dead comprised four crew members and two fighters allied with the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the Yemeni commercial vessel, as reported by Yemen’s Transportation Ministry.

These are the first fatalities linked to Houthi attacks on maritime vessels in the current phase of conflict in Yemen. With the Strait of Hormuz largely inaccessible due to Iran’s actions, attention has shifted to the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical route for Saudi oil exports. The recent attack coincides with ongoing Houthi assaults on the government-controlled port city of Mokha and other regions.

This escalation by the Houthis against Yemeni governmental forces, Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities, and shipping routes raises concerns about reigniting Yemen’s civil war. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the Houthi chief negotiator, accused Saudi Arabia of using a ceasefire to intensify an air and sea blockade since 2015. Abdul-Salam expressed willingness for negotiations, provided the blockade is lifted.

U.S. Military Actions Against Blockade Evasion

The U.S. military disclosed it fired on a Panamanian-flagged ship in the Gulf of Oman. They claimed the vessel attempted to breach the blockade on Iranian ports. This action follows President Donald Trump’s efforts to apply economic pressure on Iran. According to U.S. Central Command, the ignored warnings led to American forces disabling the ship by targeting its engine room.

Central Command reported that 55 commercial vessels have been redirected, with three ships disabled and two boarded. Over 15 U.S. warships are stationed in the Arabian Sea, including aircraft carriers. Iran’s continued aggression in the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal route for global oil trade, keeps energy prices in focus as U.S. midterm elections approach.

Pakistan’s Efforts to Mitigate Iran-U.S. Tensions

Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran for discussions with Iranian officials. His visit aimed to motivate Iran to resume negotiations with the U.S. under a peace agreement brokered by Pakistan. Photos of the meeting were shared by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Security Council Meeting on West Bank Violence

The United Nations Security Council met to address growing violence in the West Bank, initiated by five European members. Britain’s new U.N. Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh denounced Israel settler attacks as “appalling.” Meanwhile, Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour demanded international intervention for Palestinian self-determination.

Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon stated Israel opposes violence from Israelis and Palestinians, acknowledging fewer “extremist attacks” by Israelis. He criticized council members for overlooking increasing Palestinian attacks.

Syria: Legal Consequences for Former Leadership

A Syrian court sentenced former President Bashar Assad and his brother Maher to death in absentia. They received sentences for crimes against humanity during Syria’s prolonged conflict, resulting in significant loss of life. The Assads fled to Russia in 2024, as noted in the updated information.
