Gunfire Prompts White House Lockdown; Two Injured

The White House experienced a brief lockdown after gunfire broke out nearby on Saturday evening, injuring at least two individuals. Law enforcement officials revealed that one of the victims is in critical condition.

Authorities suggest that one of the injured could be a suspect, while the relationship of the other person to the incident is unclear.

Reports indicate the U.S. Secret Service confronted and fired at a suspect. No Secret Service agents have been reported injured in the encounter.

The Secret Service communicated on X that they were aware of gunfire near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Efforts to verify the information with personnel in the area are underway.

An NBC News crew at the White House reported hearing between 20 to 30 shots around 6:04 p.m. Secret Service agents instructed reporters gathered outside the North Lawn to seek shelter in the press briefing room.

The Secret Service was stationed just outside the briefing room, with weapons drawn, as the White House underwent lockdown. This security protocol, covering the White House grounds, was lifted by 6:46 p.m.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated on X that the FBI is supporting the Secret Service’s investigation at the scene.

President Donald Trump was present in the White House during the incident. Vice President JD Vance had been confirmed at the White House earlier, but his whereabouts at the time of the gunfire are uncertain. The U.S. Capitol Police did not provide immediate information.
